Why is the place of sleep so lonely, why do worries
loom large in the dark?
I lay awake and pray about my problems,
for people facing hardships,
for animals enduring cruelty,
to send the light –
but I often feel alone. I do believe
in the great light of love, the vast enduring heart.
Its manifestation, the possibility of its power.
But the dark feels bewildering.
Dawn is far off, the air is cold,
I wonder how you know
if your prayers got through?
