Leslie Beauvais - Chemistry

~ CD Review ~

Apr 8, 2015

Leslie Beauvais has the bell-like voice and enviable range of a Disney princess. Chemistry is a collection of thirteen original, or collaboratively penned tunes by Ms. Beauvais. She has a great group of musicians playing with her as well, so the result is tight and polished.

“Trippin’ On Auld Lang Syne” and “If She Only Knew” are pop tunes that remind me of the feminine, wistful and catchy hits of Olivia Newton-John.

Leslie BeauvaisThe entire album showcases the sweet fluidity of her voice as well as a strong songwriting ability that would be well-suited for musical theater. She is masterful at conveying messages of encouragement like this line from “The Piper”:

You are not through with life just yet,
Time to build the dreams you can’t forget,
The piper doesn’t want to end the dance,
Time to give your dreams just one more chance.

The title song “Chemistry” sounds like an old jazz standard, with clever lines that would have made Cole Porter proud:

You are gonna be the death of me,
there is no way that this will end well,
this passion is hot,
consuming my thoughts
You’re in my bed even when you’re not.

“Get Crazy” is a gumbo-charged Louisiana bayou kind of song, with humorous, flirtatious lyrics.

“I Want You” is a sultry, saxophone-gilded, torchy kinda song. Think slinky dress, sprawling across the grand piano kinda song. A Michelle Pfieffer in The Fabulous Baker Boys kinda song.

“Frozen” is a swaying Samba, full of light and encouragement.

The album ends with love songs written inspired by her New Orleans home, “My Quarter,” and “Gumbo Child.”

Leslie has been in the music business since she was quite young, at one time touring with The Young Americans, and also with the National Broadway touring company of Les Miserables. Her career was derailed five years ago by a hemorrhagic stroke which left her unable to walk or sing. Drawing upon great personal courage and the help of coaches and rehabilitation therapies, she was successful in reclaiming both her health and her lovely voice. What’s even more amazing is that her beautiful attitude pours through every song. You can find out more about her at lesliebeauvais.com.
