Evan McHugh on the Cayamo Cruise

Apr 28, 2008

Genevieve and I were winding our way up (or down?) a staircase on the ship and two handsome young men were passing us and we engaged in a bit of small talk with them. Genevieve asked them if they were performing on the ship and it turned out that one of them was - Evan McHugh. His friend’s name was Garrett Moore and it turns out that he is a musician too, although he didn’t sing on the ship (that I know of). You can check them both out on MySpace.

Evan McHugh ~ Garrett Moore

Evan is the kind of young man you’d like your daughter to bring home. He has a very kind, sweet face. I looked at his body language as he bent his knees a little, and hugged the guitar and tilted his head back and sang his beautiful heart out. My instinct is that he is not only a good singer/songwriter but a sincere person too. He didn’t posture, he didn’t put on, he was very genuine. He has a really nice, tenor voice, kind of like John Mayer but not so breathy. He was backed up by a bass player and sometimes by a drummer. Unfortunately, I didn’t get their names.

His first gig was out on the Lido deck of the ship, which is out in the sun, by the pool, surrounded by noisy people drinking and talking. It really wasn’t fair to put him in such a noisy spot, because his sound and songs are more internal and quiet. He should have been put in a more intimate setting. Still, he didn’t seem phased, and performed very professionally through all the chaos.

His songs are kind of jazzy and romantic and reveal a poetic soul. I’d go on and use phrases like “angelic sound”, “indisputable heart throb” or “probably the undeniable focal point of dozens of lovestruck, fainting, young women” but I won’t, in case he reads this. I don’t want him to be embarrassed. Suffice it to say that he is a very talented singer/songwriter and I hope his career goes far.
