Venue: One Longfellow Square, Portland ME ~ October 28, 2011 ~
I arrived at the Freakfest full of expectation! Why were there empty chairs? I wondered why more people weren’t aware of this event. It killed me that the place wasn’t bursting at the seams. The crowd was mostly over forty and everyone was eager for the show. The Caravan of Thieves blasted off with “I’m Gonna Eat Ya” (which they could have written for Deborah Harry) and “Love Made a Monster Out of Me”. Then we were swimming in the Talking Heads’, “Psycho Killer”. Adorable lead guy, Fuzz, flirted and cajoled the audience into hissing like snakes and snapping our fingers. Soon, we were all a-snakin’ and a-snappin’! I wanted to grab Fuzz and pinch his cheeks and adopt him. The band was wearing Halloween make-up and the stage was decorated accordingly. They played a devil medley. A disco medley. A rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
As the evening wore on they played with growing intensity and enthusiasm. We joined them singing “Bohemian Rhapsody”. They went wild playing a call and response percussion game with the audience that we failed at miserably. Our clapped responses were awful. There was bantering and laughter and the evening took on a life of its own.
Fuzz on vocals and lead guitar, Ben Dean on fiddle, Brian Anderson on standup bass, and the beautiful, Carrie Sangiovanni on vocals and rhythm guitar, all worked their magic on us. The Caravan of Thieves is the band that gives everything! They are pied pipers of enthusiasm and joy, fun to the last moment! When it was over I wanted to make them all a healthy shake with kale and energy powder and yogurt and bananas and strawberries and blueberries, and put them all in a hot tub and see to it that they all got a professional massage, manicure, pedicure, warm pajamas and a bedtime story. I love them to bits! I hope they drive safely to the next venue!
