This is footage taken by the Humane Society of the United States, of laboratory chimps who are finally being retired at Chimp Haven Sanctuary, located in Keithville, LA. As they emerge from the enclosure out into the open, they remind me of people who have been imprisoned for decades. One can only imagine the horrors, sorrow and pain these poor creatures have endured for the sake of science. Some of the chimps are in their fifties, and this is the first time they have touched grass or climbed trees, or been allowed to touch another chimp.

I deeply believe that much of the results obtained by experiments on animals could be gotten in other ways. Animals have been experimented on for hundreds of years. I believe this practice is in its last days. We live in an age when many findings can be gotten without causing suffering to anything.

Animal sanctuaries are evidence of people's attempt to make up for cruelties inflicted upon innocents. I hope that sanctuaries such as this one can be supported by generous donations for a long time to come. Hopefully one day, the balance between all living things will be such that sanctuaries will be no longer needed.
